Eggshell, Raden, Togidashi and Hira Maki-e

Raden is naturally transluscent. Typically it is inlayed over an opaque surface using black urushi, and the natural iridescence of the raden is what comes through in the finished product.

When transparent urushi is used to inlay raden over a background design, it shows through the raden at certain angles, bringing a feeling of depth to the design.
